Swimming Raft

Most of us enjoy visiting other layouts. Operating sessions and social visits give us a chance to enjoy the work of other modelers. I particularly enjoy looking for small details like wildlife, a junk car where it’s not expected or people just going about their lives in a miniature world. Small de-tailed scenes need not take a lot of time to finish and do not have to break the bank; in fact, the simple scenes are usually the most effective.
On my layout, a small patch of pier-side water needed something more. What would be better than someone enjoying the ocean on a sunny day? Yes, it’s always sunny on my layout. A few small things from the scrap box, a scale figure and I was in business.
Searching though my boxes of HO scale treasure, I found a barrel “kit”. Really it was just two halves intended to be glued together. They were cast in a reddish color so making them look rusty was easy with a little paint. I had planned to use a scrap of scribed wood for the raft deck, but at 1/8th of an inch thick it seemed a little heavy, back to the scrap box. A piece of 1/16 inch thick by 1/8 inch wide, cut to length, for the deck boards and a piece of 1/16 x 1/16 for the joists looked pretty good. I finished the scene with a ladder.
Now I have a spot for my HO people to work on their tans. Let’s hope a salt barge doesn’t show up and ruin everything.
